For this University project named: Narrative, we had to design and write a book based on the word ‘Luck’.

 

I decided to focus on the negative aspect of luck. My book represents the irony of how I broke my leg whilst performing for a 'theatre' show in rehearsal and then ended up in an 'operating theater'. I have written it in the form of a script, Act 1 describes myself in the rehearsal room breaking my leg and Act 2 tells the story of me in the hospital speaking to the consultant. 

 

The two different typefaces of Act 1 and Act 2 help to differentiate between the two opposite ‘theatre’s’. The curtains on the outer sleeve case again represent this, but also define the actual meaning of where the phrase ‘Break a Leg’ came from. The top part of the curtain is called a ‘leg’ and the actors would break through it to enter on stage, hence pulling the outer sleeves apart. Also ‘break a leg’ suggests good luck and is ironic for me as my injury was bad luck.
